Recently, I have been asked by a lot of chiropractic patients as to whether they should or should not get the Flu Vaccine. This is a personal choice I cannot answer for each individual.  When the consumer becomes informed of pros/cons to any choice they need to make, I believe the consumer is smart enough to make the best choice for themselves and loved ones.

Before you and your family rush from fear to get the Flu shot, DO YOUR HOMEWORK and consider these facts:

  1. The flu vaccine contains harmful, toxic ingredients. Ask your doctor for the vaccine’s ingredient list.  List includes, but not limited to,
    1. Mercury (aka Thimerosal – 49% mercury by weight) is a neurotoxin. Some vaccines contain as much as 25mcg of mercury per dose – 250 times the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) safety limit for mercury!
    2. Aluminum is a neurotoxin and linked to Alzheimer’s Disease.
    3. Formaldehyde is a known cancer-causing agent.
    4. Triton X-100 is a detergent.
    5. Ethylene glycol is antifreeze.
    6. Betapropiolactone is used as a disinfectant.
    7. Nonoxynol is used to kill or stop the growth of STDs.
    8. Octoxinol 9 is a vaginal spermicide.
    9. Phenol (carbolic acid) is used as disinfectant, dye.
    10. Sodium Phosphate is an ingredient in cleaning products.
  2. The flu strains in the vaccine are unpredictable. Each year around January/February, researchers travel to Asia to predict next year’s flu strain in the U.S.  Researchers assume that the U.S. will have the same strain found in Asia.  If the viral strains are not identical, the vaccine offers no protection. One study found that the overall effectiveness of vaccines against the flu in the elderly was 23% when the vaccine matching was good.
  3. The flu vaccine lacks research showing its safety and efficacy. This is a direct quote from the flu vaccine Flulaval’s package insert, “…and there have been NO controlled trials demonstrating a decrease in influenza disease after vaccination with Flulaval.” A study in October 2008 issue of Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine found that vaccinating young children against the flu had no impact of flu-related hospitalizations or doctor visits during two recent flu seasons. In 2006, a review of 51 studies involving 260,000 children, age 6-23 months, found no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo in children.
  4. There are possible side effects of the flu vaccine. Ask your doctor of possible side effects to watch for. Possible serious reactions include, but are not limited to:
  • Life-threatening allergies to various ingredients
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome (a severe paralytic disease that is fatal in about 1 in 20 cases)
  • Encephalitis (brain inflammation)
  • Neurological disorders
  • Thrombocytopenia (a serious blood disorder)

In a recent article from the Associated Press reported on Yahoo stated there has been concern of how the government will be tracking the H1N1 (swine) flu shot’s side effects. The last mass vaccination against a different swine flu in 1976 showed reports of a paralyzing condition, Guillain-Barre syndrome.

As a side note, it is interesting that 70% of doctors and nurses, and 62% of other health care workers do NOT get the yearly flu shot. Ask your doctor if they and their family get a flu shot.

Ultimately, whether or not to get the flu shot is a personal choice.  Know your rights and become informed before you give your consent.  For references and more information, go to:

Natural Proactive Steps to Prevent Colds and Flu

When you live a healthy lifestyle, you reduce your risk of getting colds and flu.  Remember, flies cause garbage no more than germs cause illness.  Germs show up because there is a suitable environment for them to flourish.  Clean up your environment through better living habits and enjoy a higher quality of life.  Here are some natural proactive steps you and your family can take to prevent colds and flu:

  1. Eat Well (eat 7-13 servings of fruits/vegetables daily; avoid white processed sugar – white processed sugar paralyzes the immune system for 2 hours; avoid wheat - wheat spikes the blood sugar extremely high)
  2. Move Well (30 minute walk daily – minimum)
  3. Drink alkaline water (minimum 64oz of alkaline water daily; avoid tap water)
  4. Get some sunshine (10 minutes daily or supplement with Vit D/cod liver oil)
  5. Think Well (excessive emotional stress at home, work, etc. will lower your body’s natural immune defenses – See Natural Stress Relief Tips)
  6. Get adequate sleep (6-8 hours of restful sleep; See Insomnia – New Ways to Improve Sleep Tips)
  7. Build your natural medicine cabinet (Ask for the Cold and Flu Season Survival Guide)
  8. Wash your hands regularly.
  9. Avoid large crowds and gatherings.
  10. Get your chiropractic adjustment! Research shows that chiropractic helps boost your immune function naturally.  Less stress on the nerves results in a stronger immune system.
